Situated alongside the Providence River is the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the first art and design schools in the country. Since 1877, the highly selective school has fostered an appreciation for creativity while benefiting from the state’s capital city in Providence, R.I. The school offers undergraduate degrees in 16 areas, which include apparel design, interior architecture, textiles and more. Undergraduates are required to take first-year studio learning in Experimental and Foundation Studies, which comprise
courses in intensive drawing, design and spatial dynamics. RISD’s close partnership with nearby Brown University allows RISD students to cross-register for Brown University classes at no extra cost, and vice-versa. As a result, students receive a specialized arts education from RISD and a sciences and humanities-focused education from Brown. RISD hosts more than 70 student clubs and organizations, from cultural groups to special interest clubs, like beekeeping. Each year, the school holds an Artist Ball, where students dress in costumes based on the yearly theme and playfully engage in a costume competition, followed by dancing and food. RISD also houses open studios every semester, where students can see their peers’ work in progress. “Family Guy'' creator Seth MacFarlane and Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia attended RISD.
