Providing Privacy for New Moms
Nursing mothers traveling to Miami for this week’s Design Miami and Art Basel/Miami events – such as the RISD x Miami reception scheduled for Wednesday, November 30 – will have access to clean, private “lactation pods” in the Miami International Airport thanks to David Jaacks BArch 92, a product design engineer at Mamava in Burlington, VT. Before the company intervened, new mothers who are breastfeeding were compelled to nurse or pump in bathroom stalls.
Jaacks recently installed eight pods at Miami International and says that similar units have been installed in more than 150 locations nationwide (see map below), including at airports, sports arenas, schools and private businesses. Using the amenity is free and part of Mamava’s mission to help breastfeeding mothers find private alternatives to public restrooms.
“We believe that breast is best,” Mamava proclaims on its website – and that “all mamas deserve a private, clean and comfortable place to use a breast pump or breastfeed anywhere, anytime.”
