Find Fine Crafts on Saturday, 10.8

image

RISD Craft, the one-day juried sales exhibition that draws crowds of art lovers to Providence’s Benefit Street each fall, runs from 10 am to 5 pm this Saturday, October 8. As the centerpiece of RISD Weekend, it features a wonderful selection of handmade fine art and design work by more than 90 alumni and 30 current students.

The work selected for RISD Craft speaks to the quality, attention to detail and mastery of craftsmanship students hone at RISD and alumni bring to their practices afterwards.

Each artist and designer with work in the show will be on site on Saturday to answer questions, accept commissions and talk about their approach, materials and processes.

Everyone who visits the sale is also encouraged to cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award, a cash prize given to whomever comes out ahead.

Jurors for this year’s RISD Craft exhibition have already selected Matt Cavallaro 10 ID for the Emerging Artist Award, which recognizes an outstanding alum who graduated within the past 10 years.

“I’ve been building things for as long as I can remember,” he says. “One of my favorite things about working in iron is that as soon as you make an object, you’ve made an artifact. We pour our love, energy and stories into these objects – and they will outlive us all.”
